Increasing evidence suggests that breast cancer development may be driven by cancer stem cells (CSCs) derived from mutated adult stem/progenitor cells, which have acquired aberrant capacity for self-renewal, long lasting survival and proliferative activity and resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs.Feline mammary carcinomas (FMC) represent an alternative model to explore the genesis of breast cancer.Surgery-derived FMC specimens were mechanically dissociated and treated with collagenase/hyaluronidase to obtain single cell cultures, immuno-magnetically deprived of fibroblasts and seeded in stem cell-permissive medium (DMEM/F 12 containing B27, bFGF, EGF, insulin and BSA).
