Although the tectono-metamorphic evolution of the Korean Peninsula is known in some detail, time constraints on it are relatively poor.It is well established that much of Korea consists of Paleo-proterozoic continental crust, with minor Meso- and Neoproterozoic additions, and rare Paleozoic magmatic and sedimentary material, all reworked around Permian-Triassic boundary times, and intruded by minor Triassic and voluminous Mesozoic plutonic rocks.Crustal thickening due to subduction followed by terrane collision in terminal Paleozoic to earliest Mesozoic time is indicated by the rare presence of strongly retro-gressed HP-granulites,some with omphacite relics, and of medium-pressure medium- to high-temperature (Barrovian type) metamorphism. The protoliths of these rocks were probably deeply buried units of the northern and western margin of the Precambrian Gyeonggi Massif, and the adjacent probably Paleozoic sedimentary units of the Imjingang Belt and probable correlatives in the Taean Formation on Anmyeondo.
