Purpose The objective of this study was to evaluate the post-operative treatment effect of brachytherapy using digital model obturators containing iodine-125 radioactive seeds on the malignant maxillary tumors. Methods and Materials Nine patients with malignant maxillary tumors were treated at Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology between August,2007 and June, 2008.Seven patients had adenoid cystic carcinoma, and two had squamous cell carcinoma.Following the surgery, all patients showed positive margins and accepted brachytherapy with iodine-125 radioactive seed implantation and digital model obturators. The obturators were made of denture soft-liner elastic material according to digital models. The activity of the iodine-125 seeds was 18.5-33.3 MBq per seed and the prescription dosage of each patient was 80Gy.Questionnaires on the quality of life were finished by the patients before and after brachytherapy. Results The radioactive seeds and dose were well distributed. The patients had high scores of quality of life in follow-ups 26 to 36 months (median 32 months) after brachytherapy, and no recurrence of tumors occurred. Conclusions The use of digital model obturators containing iodine-125 radioactive seeds is an effective option to treat patients with positive or close resection margins of malignant maxillary tumors and can improve patients quality of life.
