Nitric oxide(NO) produced by vascular endothelial cells is an important determinantof the basal tone of small arteries and arterioles. Impaired endothelial NO production has beenimplicated in the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension(PH) in humans. Available data suggestthat reduction of endothelial NO synthesis,with evidence of reduced endothelial NO synthase(eNOS)expression in pulmonary arterioles,is associated with increased pulmonary vasomotor tone andvascular remodelling in hypertensive broilers. Supplemental L-arginine,a precursor of NO,has beenshown to induce flow-dependent pulmonary vasodilation,to prevent reduced eNOS expression and,toinhibit vascular remodelling in broilers with PH. Nevertheless,its effect on pulmonary hypertensionsyndrome(PHS) incidence is limited. It appears that impaired NO is a secondary rather than acausative factor in the pathogenesis of PH in broilers.
