There has been significant interest in applying pervaporation for recovery phenol from wastewater [1].In this paper, poly(ether block amide) (PEBA 2533) symmetric membranes were prepared by dry phase version method with a uniform thickness of 30μm [2].PEBA 2533 membrane was investigated for phenol separation from dilute aqueous solution using pervaporation. The effects of feed concentration (100~10000ppm) and operating temperature (50~80°C) on the separation performance were studied in terms of phenol flux and separation factor of phenol/water.Figure 1 showed that phenol flux increased as its feed concentration rose when the temperature kept unchanged. And such a trend becomes more significant at elevated temperatures. However, when phenol concentration exceeded 8000ppm,the permeation flux reduced. The possible reason was that clustering of phenol molecules due to hydrogen bonding would occur. The effect of feed concentration on the separation factor at various temperature was shown in Figure 2.It has been shown that the separation factor was high at low feed concentration and decreased as the feed concentration increases. The results showed that the membrane performance was affected by phenol concentration, especially at elevated temperatures. At 80°C and 8000ppm(feed concentration),phenol flux reached 0.26kg/(m2 h) and seperation factor kept 30 for PEBA 2533 membrane, which was higher than the reference data [3-5].So PEBA 2533 membrane has great industrial prospect for phenol separation by pervaporation.
