Evidence from clinical studies and preclinical animal models suggests that proinflammatory cytokine overproduction from activated glia is a potential driving force for pathology progression in neurodegenerative conditions such as traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer s disease.In addition, a prior head injury can increase the risk for later development of dementia, and excessive proinflammatory responses in the brain could be a key link between these two events.
