Introduction:An Asian technique of injecting collagen below the crown of the glans-the Mushroom technique-increases the diameter of the penis and heightens sexual sensations for both the subject and their sexual partner. We investigated this technique using alternative injection locations and a different injection material to improve aesthetics and reduce the potential for side effects. Methods :We used a hyaluronan gel (CPM technology) for superficial injection into the glans of 12 patients, aged 28-61 years.Local anaesthetic was applied and three injection patterns were trialled.Patients self-assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale and a multiple choice questionnaire to determine efficacy and pre-versus post-injection sensitivity levels. Results:All patients experienced heightened levels of sensation and an increased glans diameter. The CPM(@)hyalunonan gel was well tolerated and only one sensation-related post-injection side effect was noted.Of the three injection patterns tested, only one-retrograde contiguous injection-was found to be an improvement over the original injection protocol and location. Conclusions:Injection directly into the glans increases its diameter when erect and is more effective than the original injection location. The CPM(@) hyaluronan gel is a suitable alternative to collagen for enhancement of the glans using the mushroom technique.
