This work has been conducted to assess the performance of 304,316 stainless steel and the effect of various working conditions under high velocity jet impinging in various types of media containing particles in normal water.Mass loss per unit area vs.exposure time is used to evaluate the erosion rate of the stainless steel. The surface morphologies before and after the erosion tests are observed by a high-power optical microscope. The results show that particle concentration, particle size, particle hardness and particle shape do affect the mass loss of stainless steel.Particle size and particle concentration are the two most important factors. In addition, the volume of crater is found to correlate linearly with particle kinetic energy. The type of particles and steels affect the results as well.In short, this work provides quite useful reference for 304/306 stainless steel erosion by impinging jet in various industries.
