Astrocytes and microglia are two different types of glial cells, both of which are attracting wide interest in thepain field on account of their roles in the development, spread, and maintenance of persistent neuropathic pain secondary to peripheral nerve damage, inflammatory neuritis, due to intrathecally induced glial activation.Transmitters released in pain-conducting pathways, such as calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP),substance P,and glutamate, together with serotonin (5-HT) released by descending fibers, activate microglia and astrocytes.Besides microglial activation in the spinal cord,a similar transient activation occurs along afferent nociceptive pathways ascending to the thalamus and further to the cortical level.
