Hemicellulose is a heterogeneous polymer representing approximately a third of biomass by dry weight, and the pentose xylose is the major constituent.Compared to cellulose, hemicellulose is more readily hydrolyzed to its component monosaccharides. However, the widely used model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae has no xylose catabolism pathway.
