“Cranford Town” fictitiously possesses a utopian female community, but there are all kinds of heterogeneity and divisive power inside it, so that the fiction breaks between the discourse layer and the story layer continuously Until the female utopia slowly vanishes in the narrative process. The novel embodies the author Geshe Kyle’s dilemma in the construction of female utopia, the narrative tactics in it reveal the double nature of Gaskell’s consciousness. She used the collective moral authority of the female community to resist the negative aspects of the process of modernization and, at the same time, revealed the embarrassing situation of resistance itself. This positive and negative dual critical cutting refers to all patriarchal societies: the limitations of the female community are, in the final analysis, the result of the restrictions and repression exercised by patriarchal social forces.
