Chain-Die Forming ( CDF),a novel sheet metal forming technology, has been proposed and developed recently in Australia. The primitive objective of CDF was to overcome the theoretical and practical limitations in roll forming, including redundant deformation such as longitudinal stretching, axial bending,in-plane shearing and product defects such as end-flare,edge wave, curvature and twisting,et al.In automotive industry,Advanced High Strength Steels ( AHSS) have become one of the most popular materials and steel makers are developing different AHSS to fulfill the industrial requirements. However, the material s ductility is sacrificed despite its high strength and makes AHSS very difficult to form using conventional forming methods.CDF has been suggested to solve these problems and previous studies successfully showed the potentials of CDF in AHSS forming. In order to further study the CDF and commercialize the CDF to industries,an industrial pilot CDF is developed in order to perform full scale experiments and exhibit its capabilities to AHSS applications.Preliminary experiments were conducted with AHSS on the developed pilot and the results show that CDF is capable to make AHSS products with much higher quality than conventional forming techniques.
