Heteroscorpine-1 (HS-1),a toxin protein from Thai giant scorpion (Heterometrus laoticus) venom, was recently clarified as a member of Scorpine family a polypeptide toxin family with potassium channel blocking and defensin activity.HS-1 showed paralytic activities from abdominal injection to cricket (Gryllus sp.) including inhibitory activities against Bacillus subtilis,Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in disc diffusion assay with activities over 300 times higher than the crude venom.HS-1 has molecular weight 8293 Da.After full length determination by PCR,HS-1 gene was found to be composed of two exons, separated by an intron.Deduction revealed 95 amino acid residues with 19 residues as the leading sequence. It showed about 80% similarity to Panscorpine and Opiscorpine polypeptide toxins with potassium channel blocking and defensin activity.
