The management of increased cardiovascular risk has emerged as a worldwide issue.While attention is often focused on the reduction of cardiovascular risk in patients with cardiovascular disease (secondary prevention), the reduction of cardiovascular risk in patients for a future cardiovascular event is now an important part of management without documented cardiovascular disease.As the management of lifestyle, obesity and hypertension are identifiable and manageable risk factors, the management of dyslipidemia as a cardiovascular risk factor has become of equal importance in the overall management of cardiovascular risk.The use of lipid lowering agents in general and statin drugs in particular has become an accepted standard of cardiovascular risk management.
