Background, Motivation and Objective Traditional ultrasound imagers suffer from a large data rate between their analog to digital converter (ADC) front-end and digital beamforming backend. This high aggregate data rate (~30 Gb/s) is holding back the design of imagers with small form factors and high transducer count (for 3D imaging). This work implements an analog front-end (AFE) which uses information known a priori to reduce the data rate by more than a factor of 30.
