The structural and functional architecture of biocatalytic reaction pathways at the dimensions and time-scale required by living biological cells to sense,act,prepare or repair the relevant molecules at the place where needed and at the time when required,is also of interest for man-made microsystems and devices.The large number of biocatalytic reaction classes known from nature and the selectivity of biocatalysts have provided the blueprint and tools for man-made analytical and synthetic systems.Molecular aspects of biocatalysis such as molecular economy,reaction selectivities and the topo-logy of metabolic pathways as well as the space-time organisation at micro-scale,reaction kinetics and thermodynamics are key to healthy cellular functions and resource efficiency in living biological cells.The high selec-tivity of the natures privileged chiral biocatalysts for performing asymmet-ric biocatalysis from the analytical small scale to the preparative and large scale have made biocatalytic asymmetric synthesis the preferred method of production for various reaction classes 1-5.
