Eutrophication and cyanobacterial bloom in lakes is one of the most important environmental problems around the world.Remote sensing was widely applied in detection and monitoring of water quality and health in oceans, coastal, and inland lakes. We adopted Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) datasets to reveal temporal and spatial features of the cyanobacterial bloom in Lake Dianchi.A MODIS-NDVI series at a period of 10 days in 2005 were downloaded from http://satellite.cma.gov.cn.Cyanobacterial bloom zones were categorized by the decision tree which was built by classification and regression tree(CART).In general, seasonal growth of NDVI values were in accordance with temperature and precipitation change, showed by maximum and mean NDVI.Eutrophication was always serious in the northern part of the lake in all year, where was adjacent to the main body of Kunming City.Spatial change of water bloom in the lake was reflected by the profile of NDVI from north to south. The peaks of NDVI expanded to south in the summer and the autumn.Concentrated algae bloom area varied in seasons, and the largest area happened in summer.MODIS was useful in distinction of cyanobacteria bloom s water area, meanwhile, there was disadvantage for it spectral configuration and low spatial resolution.Water bloom might be determined by pollutants load pattern, prevalent wind, lake water current, and urbanization in the future.
