Algal growth in temperate streams is typically governed by bottom-up or top-down processes (light limitation through shading versus grazing by stream herbivores).Dominant grazers may reduce algal biomass,and lower the abundance of other species,through competition for food or habitat interference.However,relatively little is known about the importance and spatio-temporal variability of such interactions in tropical streams.
