Polymeric micelles have emerged as potential drug carders because they can improve the bioavailability and lower the toxicity of the loaded drugs. However, most of the polymeric micelles are rapidly cleared from the systemic circulation and cannot achieve the desired therapeutic effect. It has been proven that polymeric micelles with a structure mimicking the outer cell membrane can evade clearance by RES and therefore significantly prolong the drug action time.It was shown that amphiphilic copolymers based on 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymers can form micelles, which at certain conditions mimic the structure of the outer cell membrane. The extent of platelet adhesion and protein adsorption onto these micelles can be effectively reduced which also leads to effective escape of this biomembrane mimetic micelles from the RES [1].
