In the past century in the Western world, healing has been perceived as primarily an individual affair that addresses personal issues for the sake of personal health. The therapist is the midwife to psychological well-being.This model has been exported to non-western cultures on the assumption that it is universally the best approach to healing. We will argue in this presentation that the West has much to learn from the rest of the world about healing that is more communal, that draws on the deepest values of a culture to give meaning to collective existence. This presentation will draw on examples of communal healing among from around the world.
