Macau was an indeterminate landscape that had to redesign itself according to large migrant flows, ethnic power interests, free market and the uncertainty of the political state of affairs of both China and Portugal, which led to constant urban transformation. At the end of 19th century Portugals interests in Macau started shifting from a mercantile intent towards a politico-diplomatic role, and to urban development as a way of economic endurance. The territorys political state of affairs was unclear as the Portuguese presence was continuously questioned by China thus Portugal had to constantly explore ways of affiming its existence.Urban space had a significant role in this affirmation intent through promoting spatial strategies and protecting a state identity.
