Production of high-value-added secondary metabolites by plant cell cultures is considered as a promising technology.Heterogeneity of plant secondary metabolites with similar structures but different bioactivities is a widely existing phenomenon in nature.Panax notoginseng (Sanchi-ginseng) is one of the traditional and most valuable Chinese herbs,and ginsenoside is one of its major valuable secondary metabolites with interesting biological activities.Many individual ginsenosides have been identified and they possess different or even opposite pharmacological activities.However,there is lack of reports regarding the manipulation of the heterogeneity of plant secondary metabolites in spite of the significance of such investigations.
