The development of animal disease models for regenerative medicine facilitates the advancement of new treatments for many diseases which cannot currently be addressed by conventional drug therapy.Novel cell therapies require animal models to study proof of concept, biodistribution, safety and immune issues.Nonhuman primates (NHPs) have anatomical, physiological and immunological systems that are most similar to humans. These characteristics make NHPs susceptible to naturalistic or induced diseases or injuries that are analogous to the human condition compared to other species.NHP models used for the testing of new regenerative therapeutics for a variety of disease conditions such as diabetes, Parkinsons disease, stroke, and osteoarthropathies, and their beneficial role in the preclinical development of cell replacement therapies will be presented and discussed.
