  The symbiotic association between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is almost ubiquitous within the plant kingdom and the fossil record has revealed that the earliest land plants had a highly developed mycorrhizal association. The mycorrhizal fungus gains access to the plant root via hyphopodia that form on the root surface and allow the initial invasion of the epidermal cell.
