Background: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a motor neuron disease caused by deficiency of the ubiquitous survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. But essential, levels of SMN protein are produced by the nearly identical gene SMN2.The human SMN2 gene has a C-to-T transition at position +6 of exon 7 and thus produces exon 7-inclusion.
