Drop-based microfluidics encapsulating protein-encoding DNA molecules can provide a stable linkage between genotype (gene sequence) and phenotype (protein function) for directed protein evolution without using cells.However, such use of drop-based microfluidics for screening desired protein variants has not been demonstrated with a protein library encoded in DNA molecules.
