Although the global population is increasing, but the land requirement for food (LRF) production is limited.Being a rapidly developing nation, with rapid population and economic growth we aimed to investigate the dynamics of food security in India from 1981 to 2011.In a country like India, where agriculture is tuned with monsoonal rainfall, natural disasters like drought, flood etc.has significant impact on agriculture of a country.Using satellite borne Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) measurement, GPCP rainfall and Standardized Potential Evapo-transpiration Index (SPEI) data we have tried to characterize the agricultural droughts over India, which affects the cropping yield and increases the land demand for food. This has strong impact on the economy of the country.Climatologically vegetation condition of extreme north westem and eastern part is poor, whereas the south central part is the food bowl of India.Severe droughts mainly affected the vegetation of western, central and south-eastern part, whereas, moderate droughts predominantly affects the eastern and southern part of India. Moreover, we have analyzed the regional impact of agricultural drought on cropping yield and food production over India.
