Ever-increasing cutting speeds and lubrication-free machining are major driving forces for the development of a new generation of coatings.This study has been directed at developing new nano-multilayered hard coatings based on the CrXN ternary system (X=Al,Si and Mo).Three types of multilayer coatings,CrSiN,CrAlN,CrMoN,with different Si,Al and Mo contents were deposited on M42 substrates using closed filed unbalanced magnetron sputter ion plating (CFUMSIP) technique.Systematic characterization on the chemical compositions,morphology,microstructure,hardness and wear properties of these multilayer coatings have been investigated using GDOES,low angle XRD,SEM,TEM,nanoindentation and wear tests.The cutting performance and life-span of these coatings on cutting tools were evaluated using field drilling tests.
