Recently, we have developed novel mass spectrometry for bio-complex measurements.Instead of conventional electrospray and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), laser induced acoustic desorption method has been developed to measure biomolecules. In addition, mass spectrometry has also been used to achieve rapid direct DNA sequencing.Direct sequencing without the need of DNA ladders production by either Sangers enzymatic method or Maxam-Gilberts chemical degradation method has also been achieved.Furthermore, mass spectrometry has also been used for microarray hybridization detection.Since several hybridization reactions can be pursued at a single hybridization spot, much higher throughput can be obtained due to the high multiplicities. There are no needs for labeling with mass spectrometry detection. In addition to DNA microarray, mass spectrometry can also be used to detect protein array, aptamer array ant etc.The cost of disease analysis with mass spectrometry is cheaper.Genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, Huntington disease, and dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) have been successfully detected.Rapid identification of bacteria and/or virus is critical for the identification of many contagious diseases.Laser induced acoustic desorption was also used to measure S16 for bacteria identification. The mass of an entire cell can also be obtained.
