The oceanic uptake of human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) is leading to a gradual reduction in the pH of the surface waters of the world’s oceans,an effect widely termed “ocean acidification”.The present average surface ocean pH of around 8.2 is now already 0.1 pH units lower than pre-industrial times -a considerable thirty per cent increase in [H + ].Under the IPCC IS92a “business as usual” CO2 emissions scenario, the Year 2100 sees pCO2 reaching ~750 ppmv resulting in a drop of surface ocean pH of around 0.3 units.Such rapid and dramatic changes to ocean carbonate chemistry are expected to have a detrimental impact on the marine phytoplankton.

It is now recognised that in parts of the oceans, nitrogen fixation by prokaryotic organisms may represent a significant fraction of new nitrogen supply to surface waters, but that nutrients other than
