Telomere maintenance is important for all dividing cells, including cancer cells.Functional telomeres are essential for genomic stability, and without mechanisms maintaining telomeres, cells activate pathways leading to cell-cycle arrest or apoptosis.(1).Activation of telomerase is thought crucial in telomere maintenance plays an important role in the mechanism of tumor cell immortalization (2).TERT (telomerase reverse transcriptase) is the catalytic subunit of human telomerase. It is responsible for the addition of 5-TrAGGG-3 repeats to telomeric DNA.In normal cells, telomerase activity appears to be tightly controlled, but is reactivated in about 90% of malignant tumor cells (3).
