<正>My research is mainly conducted on cross-cultural translations. The first part of the paper rehearses the inter-relationship between language and culture. Language has long been viewed as a tool for communication.A nation’s language invariably reflects and expresses its culture. So a mastery of English or another language for the purpose of using it as a tool for intercultural communications is hardly possible without the understanding and knowledge of the cultural values, customs, and traditions of the given country because culture patterns, customs, and ways of life are expressed in language; culture-specific world views are reflected in language. The second part of the paper discusses translation as a bridge between intercultural communications. To achieve effective intercultural communications by way of translation is a complex process. It involves the understanding of two different cultures.A major area of intercultural translations lies in the belief, value system, and world view, which are the source of many of the apparent cultural differences. This part offers some evidence by providing some translations of proverbs, sayings, and even words of colures, etc.,in both Chinese and English. It is to demonstrate that it is the different social values, customs, and word connotations between Chinese and English that play the decisive role in intercultural translations. In the third part of the paper a research project is reported. It is concerned with an investigation of the cross-cultural misunderstanding made by Chinese students in their English translation courses.Sometimes a message can be encoded in one culture but decoded in another.Misunderstanding may occur as a result of the different cultural context in which the encoding and decoding take place. An analysis of the trouble sources for cultural misunderstanding is also discussed. It is an attempt to find out ways which can help students increase their cultural awareness, overcome some difficulties in their cultural understanding and improve their ability to handle the language appropriately in their translation practice. In the final part of the paper Chinese translator Yan Fu’s three criteria for translation (faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance)are stressed. These criteria are considered to be culture-orientated and have been profoundly influential in the field of translation. Then some translation techniques are suggested with the intention of removing the cultural barriers and fulfilling Yan Fu’s criteria in crass-cultural translations. These translation techniques include: 1.Transliteration 2.Word-for-Word Translation 3.Annotation 4.Free Translation 5.Translation by Cultural Substitution
