Serratia marcescens, the Gram-negative bacteria,a facultative anaerobic, intestinal bacteria (Enterobacteriaceae),often found in soil, water plants.Serratia marcescens is unique among enteric bacteria in many respects.Environmental isolates of S.marcescens characteristically produce a red pigment, prodigiosin, which is reported to have anti-fungal,anti-bacterial,anti-protozoal/anti-malarial,anti-microalgae,and immunosuppressive activity. Some strains of S.marcescens are capable of producing prodigiosin, which ranges in color from dark red to pale pink, depending on the age of the colonies and growth conditions.
