Phosphoinositides are a family of phospholipids in the cytoplasmic leaflet of plasma membranes and cell organelles. They are minority lipids differing by the degree of phosphorylation of the inositol headgroup and showing significant organelle-specific distributions. They act as signals recognized by specific protein domains on their target effectors, localizing cytoplasmic proteins to the organelle and activating membrane proteins.
