Teaching materials for a conversation course play an important role in developing students’ oral English. The conversation course aims for students to develop interactive skills and use what they have learned for communication in the target language. Therefore interesting and authentic materials which are close to real-life situations will arouse students’ learning interest. Teacher’s teaching method and students’ learning strategies are also factors to contribute to their achievement.Meanwhile, this paper introduces language acquisition theories and elements related to materials development. It discusses the relationship between input and interaction, the effect of anxiety on teaching and learning, classroom activities and organizations. The problems are reported and the solutions to student’s reluctance to participate in oral work are suggested, and finally a sample unit is presented which proved to be effective. In short, in order to enhance student’s motivation to learn oral English, the teacher should have a positive attitude toward the task and target in addition to well-designed teaching materials. Appropriate teaching methods and group dynamics will also undoubtedly enliven the classroom atmosphere.
