It is well recognized that Hemingway enjoys all unshakable place in the world literatureas well as in the American literature largely due to his novels.Hence his works arefrequently read and commented world-wide.
HemingwayS works mostly demonstrate the spirit of"cough guy",which is defined as"a mall who lives correctly, following the ideals ofhonor, courage and endurance in a worldthat is something chaotic, often stressful, and always painful." He thinks men should keepthe grace under pressure though he is defeated. In his early work The Sun Also Rises,Hemingway describes the expatriates from America who hate the War and Can’t clean upthe spiritual misery, suffering from disillusionment, pain and the loss of the"lost generation".In the war novel A FareweH to Arms,Henry experiences the painful course:volunteering to the war--being wounded--separating from the war--losing love and thebaby. He grows up from innocence to maturity, from ideal to disillusionment, from love tonothingness.Actually,Hemingway exposes the whole generation, including himself.TheWestern values and system of philosophy vanished after the War.
Hemingway’S early articles are concerned with individuals. The protagonists fightalone for individual happiness without caring about others. His main characters aredisillusioned with failed ideals. What the war has affected is not only their life, but alsotheir former beliefs. But it represents much love and conceTn about others in For Whom theBell Tolls.Jordan, the protagonist of the novel, devotes himself to Spanish peoples finalhappiness. In some critical word.FD,I Whom the Bell Toll is generally agreed to be"hismost ambitious artistic endeavor and a heroic epic of the 20th century American literature."For Whom the Bell T0lls is all important work which inherits the past and ushers in thefuture.Compared with his novel A Farewell to Arms,Jordan, the protagonist,is no longer in the disillusionment but a confident and persistent revolutionary soldier with ambition andideal. He also looks forward to love, but love is not only an individual happiness against the war any more.Because Jordan realizes that the canse he is taking on is a just War opposing Fascism.Jordan is an unselfish revolutionary hero, wim confidence and noble ideal.Hefights for the people. His belief is peopleS will."I believe in the people and their right to govern themselves as they wish."For the belief,Jordan leaves his peaceful homeland to the disaster-ridden Spain. And for the belief,Jordan sacrifices his life in the end.Just like Donnes thought that no person stands alone—"No man is an island, entire of itself"-everyone belongs to a community. As a result, the death of any person diminishes Donne himself because he is a part of mankind.Jordan, the solitary hero finally devotes himself tothe cause of the whole mankind. The freedom and liberation in one country mean those ofthe world. All people of the world are brothers and sisters.
For Whom the Bell Tolls reflects the development of HemingwayS creative thought and the change of his ideology. He participates in World warⅡ actively and these special experiences in World warⅡ give Hemingway hope and courage.then Hemingway conveyshis feeling to his following characters. He changes from being pessimistic into being optimistic。purifies spirits and frees himself. Therefore at the end of For Whom the BellTolls,Jordan completes his task and waits for the coming death calmly(without bitterness).Maria,JordanS love and hope,is still alive. She is the sunshine going through the darkness.Just like what he said in the last page when he finished the great novel."What I wrote is notthe Spanish Civil War…but the beautiful feeling that I have known for 18 years."It is SOseemingly right and so wonderful, like a fairy tale.Furthermore, the romantic atmospherecan give people strength. This strength helps people become more persistent, more faithful, and more courageous. All of these are for the pursuit of life, happiness and love.He loveslife, because life-though it is sometimes ugly and painful--is beautiful, with endlessdelight and the soure of happiness.
Jordan iS different from Henry and Jack.He is more concerned about others andsociety. He sacrifices his life for the just cause.Through Jordan,Hemingway portrays therevolutionary heroism of dedicated republican soldiers to show his own love to humanbeings.
