China and Laos are friendly neighbors linked with mountains and waters,and the people of the two countries have co-existed in peace and harmony since the ancient times.On April25,1961,China and Laos established diplomatic relations and have maintained neighborly and friendly relations ever since.Between the late1970s and mid-1980s,their relations suffered twists and turns.In1989,however,Sino-Laotian relations returned to the normal.Over the recent years,China and Laos have seen a sound development of their economic and trade relations.Documents on cooperation in trade,investment protection,tourism and automobile transport were signed respectively and the committee on bilateral economic,trade and technological cooperation was set up between both sides.
Lao PDR is one of65countries along the"One Belt,One Road"and one of57member states that initiated the Asian Investment Bank,one of the countries that agreed and supported the initiative"One Belt,One Road,"but started as one of the most beneficiary countries.
Investment and trade cooperation is a key element between China and Laos to jointly build one"One Belt,One Road."China is the number one investor in Laos,the largest contributor to Laos and the second largest trading partner of Laos.China has actively participated in the Lao PDRs power plant development project,helping Laos to complete the"ASEAN Battery"strategy.
Achievements in economic cooperation between the two countries the two sides have made effective cooperation in regard to interconnection.The China-Laos railway has been constructed in full swing since last December,while China helped Laos successfully launched its first satellite in November2015.
Secondly,the two sides actively promote industrial capacity investment,energy exploration,and infrastructure building.Thirdly,the two sides actively promote cooperation in economic development parks,the economic development zone in capital Vientiane and the Bohan-Boten cross-border economic cooperation zone.
The good timing means the Belt and Road Initiative highly fits Lao policy of changing a"land-locked"country to be a"land-linked"country.Whats more,the two economies are mutually complementary since Laos is in needs of funding,technology,and talents which China is ready to provide.
The Geographical convenience means China and Laos are good neighbors as the China-Laos railway will further improve traffic conditions and economic ties between the two countries.In addition,the two nations enjoy comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership since2009.In recent years,leaders of the two countries have exchanged frequent visits and deepened friendly exchanges and cooperation in political,economic,cultural and other fields.
This paper aim to review the significance of the economic cooperation between China and Laos and perspective of initiative of"One Belt,One Road"that more focus on(1)cooperation issues from the past,but especially in the recently between China and Laos on economic cooperation and perspective of initiative of"One Belt,One Road",(2)This thesis also mention Laos is a small economy whose development is highly dependent on its larger neighbors like China,and(3)furthermore,the significance of this study lies in its attempt to examine the positive impact of how increased economic of China can impact the development of Laos,a landlocked,resource scarce country,and gradually transform its geographical disadvantage into a positive factor.
