《威尼斯商人》中的夏洛克一直被视为是集狡黠、贪婪和冷血于一身的反面形象,而《红字》中的白兰则被誉为是隐忍、坚强和善良的化身,其正面形象博取了众人的同情,因此二者获得的评价也大相径庭。其实,这两个被不同时代的作家所塑造的人物有着内在的同一性,包括相似的遭遇和散发的浓郁的悲剧色彩等。本文以约翰洛克的白板理论、边沁的功利主义以及卢梭的社会契约论为理论基础,从不同的维度来解析夏洛克与白兰所在的文本语境和历史语境,勘探这两个角色本质上的同一性。
