张承志在《心灵史》中通过塑造哲合忍耶这个底层信仰群体,展现了哲合忍耶教派反抗宗教压迫的心灵的历史,并以此作为中国传统文化的参照系,进行了清醒的文化批判。由此可以考察张承志作为当代知识分子与底层信仰的互动关系。一方面,张承志的回族血统、学者的视野、“为人民”的理想和实地考察写作观的践行,使他有趋向底层信仰的可能;另一方面,他对底层信仰有着自觉的建构,借助《心灵史》独特的文体,以强烈的个体意识向着人心、人性、人道的方向发掘,对中国传统文化和当代学术界进行了深刻的文化批判。
