戏曲艺术经过十年来的革新创造,有了很大的发展。1958年大跃进开始,我国三百多个戏曲剧种全面地进入一个新的革新阶段,那就是大力发展表现现代生活的艺术能力,积极地反映伟大的群众时代,反映工农兵的生活。这是一个伟大的艺术革命运动,它是我国伟大的文化革命的一部分,是这几年来戏曲战线上政治革命、思想革命的必然产物;是戏曲艺术贯彻党的总路线,在党的领导下,政治挂帅,和工农兵结合,实现戏曲艺术的大跃进的必然结果。戏曲艺术发展了新的表现能力之后,使它既能表现古代人民生活,又能表现现代人民生活,从而更好地体现了党的“百花齐放,推陈出新”的方针,使它能更多更好地为社会主义革命和建设服务,为工农兵服务,同时也为戏曲艺术的发展开辟了极为广阔的道路。但是戏曲艺术在表现新的生活、新的群众方面,毕竟还是一个崭新的课题。这几年来虽然已经取得了不少经验,做出了很大成绩,但是由于传统表演艺术和新生活之间存在着一定距离,有的剧种距离小一些,有的就大一些,因此在表演艺术和新生活之间、继承传统和革新创造之间存在着矛盾。如何进一步革新戏曲的表演艺术(包括唱工、做工、音乐伴奏和舞台美术),正确处理艺术和生活的矛盾,使戏曲在表现新生活上,形式和内容更和谐、更美好地结合起来,这就有待于戏曲界在实践中不断地总结经验,交流经验,进行研究探讨,借以集思广益,更快更好地来克服戏曲艺术往前发展中所碰到的问题。为此目的,我们在这里发表了马彦祥、红线女和洛汀三位同志的文章,作为这个问题的讨论的开始,希望戏曲工作者踊跃参加。

How to further reform the opera performance art (including singing, workmanship, music accompaniment and stage art), correctly handle the contradictions between art and life, and make the opera more harmonious and beautiful in the performance of new life It is necessary for the opera community to constantly sum up experiences, exchange experiences and conduct research and discussion in practice so as to draw on collective wisdom and overcome the problems encountered in the development of traditional opera art faster and better.
