爱伦·坡“为艺术而艺术”的创作思想虽然无法获得加缪等存在主义哲学家的认同,但其艺术创作的多维性使其影响远远超出了他所处的时代。《人群中的人》是爱伦·坡最具现代意识的作品,凸显了爱伦·坡对转型期人类社会精神危机的关注,开启了近现代荒诞叙事之先河。小说以隐喻式的城市书写揭示了现代社会生活的虚无荒诞,人与自然(社会)、他人、自我关系的异化,即异化的城市生活场景、虚无的个体身份认同与荒诞的个体生存意识。爱伦·坡对城市人群孤独、虚无的内心世界的描绘,对叙述者与追逐对象追踪动机的探寻,是对社会转型期城市化给游荡者(包括坡本人)带来的空虚与孤寂的真实写照。
