“文身断发”一语,出自《史记·周本纪》,其文曰:“古公有长子曰太伯,次日虞仲。……太伯、虞仲知占公欲立季历以传昌,乃二人亡如荆蛮,文身断发,以让季历。”“文身断发”亦作“断发文身”,见于《左传》哀公七年:“仲雍嗣之,断发文身,赢以为饰。”《庄子·逍遥游》:“宋人资章甫,而适诸越,越人断发文身,无所用之。”又作“文身翦发”,见《韩诗外传》卷八。或作“剪发文身”,见《说苑·奉使》。亦有作“披发文身”者,如《礼记·王制》曰:“东方日夷,被发文身,有不火食者。”
