This report from the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigates two methods for recovering zinc, copper, silver and iron from the magnetic portion of a canister retort. A small-scale trial was conducted on the reduction smelting of high-copper pig iron output and the smelting of copper-silver-iron matte and pig iron production. In both cases, zinc is smoked into oxides and recovered. Direct reduction smelting produces high copper-containing metallic iron and a small amount of ice-rich copper based on sulfur contained in the slag. The second method product is a matte containing almost all of silver, 80% of copper and 37% of iron, and an iron-copper alloy containing all the rest of the copper. From molten high-copper iron, almost all of the copper can be made from metallic lead or sodium sulfate and qualified cast iron can be obtained.
