中国从前的绘画史,不出两种方法,即其一是断代的记述,他一是分门的记述。凡所留存到现在的著作,大都是随笔札记,当为贵重的史料是可以的,当为含有现代意义的“历史”是不可以的。绘画的——不只是绘画,以至艺术的历史,在乎着眼作品本身之“风格发展”(Stilentwicklung)。某一风格的发生、滋长、完成以至开拓出另一风格,自有横在它下面的根源的动力来决定;一朝一代的帝皇易姓实不足以界限它,分门别类又割裂了它。断代分门,都不是我们现在要采用的方法。我们应该采用的,至少是大体上根据风格而划分出时期的一种方法。对于这点,即中国绘画史之时期的划分,若干外国人
