The first of two 200-ton oxygen bottom blown converters at the Chicago-based U.S. Republican steel plant was commissioned in March 1977. The converter height to diameter ratio of about 1 to 1.2, the furnace capacity of 180 meters to 3, the use of water-cooled ring, the converter tilting mechanism driven by the four electric motors, but also equipped with lifting water cooled flue gas collection hood. Slagging agents, such as lime powder and fluorite, are blown into the furnace together with oxygen through a nozzle at the bottom of the converter. Devices that blow in other solid materials during smelting are located near the charge. Therefore, no overhead silos and equipment lances are required
