The decline of estrogen levels in postmenopausal women has a negative impact on the occurrence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and obesity, and these are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Estrogen has the potential to potentially improve CVD risk by improving vascular function, cholesterol levels, glucose metabolism, blood pressure, and myocardial protection. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can effectively treat the menopausal symptoms. HRT of postmenopausal women is not suitable as a primary and secondary prevention of CVD. However, if HRT is used in mid-menopausal and postmenopausal women with middle-aged menopausal symptoms, there is a “window of time” that is protective of the cardiovascular system.
