This pet shop is a mysterious place you might find in any Chinatown around the world. There are various animals from the most
ordinary pets to savage[凶猛的] predators[食肉动物] and creatures that should only be found in myths and legends. Customers often find these new pets affecting their lives more than they ever expected – fulfilling their best dreams…or realizing their worse nightmares.
Created by Matsuri Akino in the 1990s, Pet Shop of Horrors has proved itself one of the must-read classics in Shoujo Manga (Girl’s Comic). Akino’s artwork is simplistic[过分简单的], but her seemingly irrelevant[不相关的] stories share such an atmosphere[气氛] of sadness, it might still leave you something to reflect upon when you close the book.
An exotic pet shop quietly opens its door to one who reaches certain
phase of his life. The Chinese shopkeeper – known as “Count D” – attempts to sell the customer a pet that will meet his needs. The pets always come with three rules. Violation[违反] of these rules usually leads to dire[可怕的] consequences, of which the shop cannot be held responsible. Meanwhle, several creepy[毛骨悚然的]
cases draw Leon Orcot’s attention. Suspecting Count D of criminal activity,
the local cop frequently shows up in the shop to investigate. As the series
progresses, the two enter into a strange kind of friendship, and Leon slowly realizes the biggest secret of the shop is Count D himself…
Although named “horror,” the
series doesn’t aim to frighten its readers, unless you believe that human nature might be really terrifying from time to time. From one story to another, the series takes a fascinating
look into human souls. As Count D says, the shop will offer its customers love, dreams and hope – but when desire runs wild[放肆], things can go frightfully[吓人地] wrong. Elabo-
rately[精巧地] interpreting[诠释] people’s
self-centeredness[居中] and self-contradiction[矛盾], the stories carry a subliminal[下意识的] meaning: instead of getting hurt by some strange animals, most customers are victims of weaknesses of their own weaknesses.
