The low concentration sulfite method described in the article is based on the release of sulfur dioxide from an acidic aqueous sample solution by bubbling nitrogen and the reabsorption of sulfur dioxide in a solution containing ferric ions and a 1.10-phenanthroline solution. The reduction of ferric ions with ferrous ions to ferrous ions while forming an orange tri-C1.10 phenanthroline (divalent) complex. After removing excess ferric ion with ammonium bifluoride, further color development will cease and the stable complex is measured by colorimetry at 510 nm. The detection limit is 0.01 mg / L of sulfite ions. The effects of interference and elimination and temperature are discussed.
