Objective To explore the effect of non-nutritive sucking on neonatal pain caused by heel blood sampling. Methods 128 newborn infants were divided into control group (57) and non-nutritive group (71) according to the time of admission. Heart rate, respiration , Percutaneous oxygen saturation, and score 1min after puncture according to the newborn pain assessment scale pain score. Results After 15 seconds and 1 minute of blood sampling, heart rate and respiration of neonates in both groups were significantly higher than those before blood collection (P <0.01), and the levels of respiration before resuscitation were recovered 3 minutes after puncture. Percutaneous oxygen saturation of newborns in both groups was only 15s (P <0.01). The score of neonatal pain in non-nutritive sucking group was significantly lower than that in control group (P <0.01). Conclusion Non-nutritive sucking can relieve neonatal pain caused by heel blood sampling and can be widely used in clinical practice.
