身为上海博物馆馆长的他,时时沉浸在书画的海洋中,他多次策划的书画展出活动,原本与他深厚的学养紧密相连。现在让我们走进他的家“参观”一番,那才是名副其实的——
第一次推门进入陈燮君家的人大都会发出“哦!”的一声惊叹,不为别的,只因您眼前会出现“奇观”:他的家满屋子的书籍堆得像云南石林一般。古人以“汗牛充栋”形容人家藏书多,陈燮君家的书山书林恐怕没有什么成语可以来形容。他的书多得早已无法用书架来容纳了,只得一摞摞堆放在地上、桌上、床上,直至人和书都几乎没有立锥之地,许多地方你都必须侧着身子才能通过。是的,这个家里没有正规的书房,他整个家都是书房。卧室床榻的三分之一地盘是书,厨房里的一张大餐桌也堆满了书,只剩下约六分之一的地方吃饭。
陈燮君每天回家都要写东西至深夜。他坐在客厅一张红木罗汉床上写,累了就躺下打个盹,周围也横七竖八地躺满了书。书桌是一张小小的琴桌,上面依然堆满了书。每次写东西,他就扒拉出一块仅够放下一张稿纸的“空地”,他每年百把篇文章就是这样诞生的。
书摞放得这么高,以至我们总担心它会倒下压到谁,但陈燮君乐观地答道:“新加坡有这么多槟榔树,像狼牙棒似的槟榔熟了就会掉下来,但是从来没有听说谁被砸到过么!”事实也真的是这样,他一家老小确实从未被书砸过,但在夜深人静的睡梦中,他们时常会被书倒下的声音惊醒。不过久而久之,大家也习惯成自然了,他和女儿陈颖甚至能够分辨得出是哪摞书倒了,朝哪个方向倒的。
陈燮君说他家大概有四五万本书,买书是他最痴迷的癖好,哪里有打折的书市他都知道,他总能经常淘到好书,尤其是他喜欢的文学、历史、哲学的书。自从当了上海博物馆馆长后,艺术和文博类的图书则又成为最主要的购买对象。他是个当今难得的杂家,说通俗点,他是研究做学问的学问的,那满屋子的书,外人看上去又多又乱,陈燮君却清清楚楚什么书该到哪里去拿。
爱书、爱学习是他家庭的传统。陈燮君父母都是老知识分子,从小教育子女勤奋好学,对于买书求学的钱从不吝啬。老两口耄耋之年了仍好学不倦,老父亲退休后爱上书法和绘画,他的草书和白描人物颇受行家好评,他画的鲁迅像被一家博物馆收藏,他的画也被《新民晚报》选用刊登。老两口对晚辈做学问极为支持,陈燮君发表过的每一篇文章,老两口都会将其仔细地收集整理成档。陈燮君夫妻极孝顺,他父母住的房子是非常普通的老式多层楼房,而且是在六楼顶层,没有电梯。他担心老两口上下不便,他们夫妇便将自己条件较好的房子让给父母住,自己住到了父母的房子里。老父亲83岁了,关爱孩子之心一如既往。他习惯每晚两三点钟起床,在练习书法的同时在炉子上熬着粥,而这时往往陈燮君刚刚忙完睡下。到了早晨6点30分,老父亲就打电话叫醒儿子,然后带上熬好的粥走上几个街区给儿子送去,每天如此,劝也劝不住。
若问陈燮君爱好之最,那就是非绘画莫属了。
小时候他家楼下的外贸广告公司是他的美术启蒙学校,他对那些色彩缤纷的广告画流连忘返,他经常翻阅当时外面很少见的进口包装设计书籍,尤其痴迷观看广告公司的美工临摹的画作,回到家里后自己找来纸和笔也学着他们尽情涂鸦。
7岁那年他认识了同学陈逸鸣的哥哥陈逸飞,他们两家相距很近经常往来,后来他和陈逸鸣兄弟俩都成了莫逆之交,陈逸飞去世后,陈燮君还亲自为他操办告别仪式。
16岁的时候陈燮君创作了一幅反映工人学知识学文化的油画《自编教材》,参加了上海美术馆展出。这次成功给了陈燮君极大的鼓励,此后画画成了他人生的重要组成部分。
陈燮君的多才多艺在上海文化界是出名的。他不仅从小对文史哲有着执著的爱好,擅长书画音乐,会弹奏多种乐器,而且还非常早地从事过电子计算机内存储器和程序设计工作。上世纪70年代末,他进入上海社会科学院,从事西方哲学研究,这使他沉浸在阅读大量经典的欢愉中。他在当代新学科理论研究、时间学、空间学和科学方法论方面进行了卓有成效的理论探索,出版了《学科学导论——学科发展理论探索》《时间学》《生活中的时间学》《现代生活中的矛盾旋律》《生活中的色彩学》等一系列著作,1990年,他被评为研究员。
在上海社会科学院工作十七八年后,他先后担任上海图书馆副馆长和上海博物馆馆长。
上海博物馆是发挥陈燮君才华的风水宝地,他到任后策划了一系列在国内外产生巨大影响的文物大展,如“晋唐宋元书画国宝展”、“淳化阁帖最善本展”、“周秦汉唐文明大展”、“故宫博物院和上海博物馆藏书画经典展”、“中日书法珍品展”等,几乎每个大展都以其独有的亮点、独有的珍稀性和高难度引起广泛的轰动效应。陈燮君说:“上海博物馆这金字招牌的魅力大,在国际上拥有如此影响,那是几任老馆长、老专家倾注了全部心血造成的。我们只是享用了他们的经验,传承了博物馆的文脉。
陈燮君现在除了上海博物馆的工作外,还担任了上海文广局的领导工作,忙得不亦乐乎,但是他仍然忘不了绘画,竟然能不断画出画来,他画崇明岛,画西藏雪域,并举办了数次成功的展览,真让人感到意外。

A Super Bookworm

Those who step into Chen Xiejun’s house for the first time would always wow at the sight of a marvelous spectacle: The books in his house are piled up like a jungle. An age-old phrase that books are enough to fill the roof and cause the ox to perspire before the cart is used to describe how many books a scholar could have. But such a set phrase is deficient to describe the books Chen piles up in his apartment. It does not have a study. Books are heaped everywhere: in bedrooms, in the kitchen, on the floor, and even the table in the kitchen is stacked with books. In some places, you need to step sideways carefully through this jungle of books. Has any of these piles of books ever crashed and hurt someone in the family? Never.But it is not infrequent that the family wake up at midnight to a large noise as a pile of books collapses heavily onto the floor. Without getting up to look, Chen can tell which pile has fallen and in which direction.
Chen says he has about 50,000 books at home. He knows all the bookstores in Shanghai. And he always can find the books he wants to buy: literature, history and philosophy. Since he became the curator of the Shanghai Museum, books on art and culture have become his favorites. People think he is a walking encyclopedia.In plain words, he researches how to research. He knows where to find a book in his large forest.
Chen writes every night at a small desk also heaped high with books. He needs to clear out a space just large enough for a piece of paper. This way he produces about 100 articles per year.
Chen Xiejun is from a family of scholars. His parents never said no to the children when they wanted money to buy books to seek knowledge. Probably this explains why he is talented in many things. He is a painter. He is a musician. In the early days of computer age, he even worked as a designer of computer hardware. In the late 1970s, he entered the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences to study western philosophies. This opened his eyes to a broad horizon of western classics and brand new thoughts. After nearly 2 decades at the academy, Chen became deputy curator and then curator of the Shanghai Museum. The museum is exactly where Chen can put his profound knowledge and inspiration to use. He has masterminded and produced a series of highly influential exhibitions of ancient Chinese cultural treasures, some of which can only be described as sensationally rare.
As curator of the museum and a leader of Shanghai Culture Bureau, Chen has an extremely tight schedule, but he still manages to paint creatively. He has held a few successful solo exhibitions of his paintings. Impossible it might sound, but those who have seen the book piles at his house know nothing is impossible with a super bookworm named Chen Xiejun.
